Computer Science in Mechanical Engineering

Graduates of this specialisation obtain fundamental knowledge in the application of IT and numerical calculation techniques with emphasis placed on the practical application of the subject matter. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of computer methods in various areas of engineering activity as well as the connection between the theoretical description of issues and experimental methods with IT tools.
Access to specialised engineering software installed on computers with great computational power in Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH allows students to conduct advanced calculations and model–simulation research.

The study plan, besides standard subjects, covers a group of elective subjects, enabling the individual development of students. The main educational feature for graduates of the Computer Science in Mechanical Engineering specialisation is its interdisciplinary nature. Students obtain good theoretical and practical preparation in: IT, mathematics, and mechanics as well as knowledge regarding:

  • computer modelling and virtual prototyping,
  • smart measurement systems,
  • programming languages,
  • computer-aided technical calculations,
  • computer-aided design.

As part of the specialisation, students become familiar with methods of modelling systems using, among others, Finite Element Methods, Boundary Element Methods, Finite Volume Methods as well as other advanced calculation methods. As part of the education process, great attention is given to the practical mastery of working with the available computer tools. The combination of basic knowledge, modern engineering education as well as the deepening of knowledge regarding modern calculation and measurement software creates a graduate prepared for independent formulation as well as resolution of specified tasks in various areas of technology, using modern methods and tools of computer technology. Graduates of the Computer Science in Mechanical Engineering specialisation find employment in scientific−research units, design offices, offices providing CEA/CFD services, consulting firms as well as production plants. The interdisciplinary nature of the education enables graduates to freely move in the dynamically-changing employment market and is attractive for employers.
